It was just announced in Pittsburgh (site of the G20 meeting) that OAS Secretary General Insulza's peace mission to Tegucigalpa, which had been put off because of the junta's closing the airports in Honduras, is now scheduled for Friday or Saturday. Insulza irá el viernes o sábado a Honduras a impulsar el diálogo, dice Brasil [Brazil: Insulza to Go to Honduras to Start Dialogue on Friday or Saturday]:
[The Brazilian government announced today that Secretary General José Miguel Insulza of the OAS will lead an international delegation to Honduras Friday or Saturday for the purpose of starting dialogue.]
The delegation will also include representatives of the Brazilian government and of other Latin American countries, as well as Spain's Secretary of State for Latin America, Juan Pablo de Laiglesia. Brazilian Ambassador to the U.S. Antonio Patriota announced that the objective of the mission is "to establish dialogue between President [Manuel] Zelaya, who was constitutionally elected, and the golpistas, and it is difficult to do that without an international presence."
Patriota also mentioned that Brazil has requested a meeting of the Security Council of the UN in order to discuss the political crisis in Honduras.
Marco Aurelio García, an adviser to the President of Brazil, said that the objective of the government of Roberto Micheletti is to prolong the crisis until the presidential elections in November, in the hope that the international community would recognize the winner of those elections as the new ptresident of the country. García said, "We have made it clear that we would not accept the result of such elections." He added that the insinuations that Venezuela assisted Zelaya's return to Honduras are "a form of support for the coup" and affirmed that Brazil will receive anyone who knocks on the door of one of its embassies.
There's a new article on the unusual new weapon, previously called a "sonic gun", that the golpistas used against demonstrators outside the Brazilian embassy in recent days: Ejército de Honduras usa armas electrónicas de última generación [Honduran Army Uses Latest Generation of Electronic Arms'. The article connects them with recent reports over Radio Globo that a retired Israeli general has been training and supplying the golpistas:
In his speech at the UN today, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez said that the Pentagon is in conflict with Obama and the State Department over the crisis in Honduras. He said U.S. officers in Honduras knew about the coup and supported it.
That Pentagon is Behind Coup in Honduras].
A new report confirms the earlier report that the UN Secretary General's office will stop furnishing aid for the prospective November elections in Honduras, as it no longer considers them credible.
